9/12/11 — today’s equation

Yes, of course, we can start with

9, 11, 12

and use the digits of

1, 1, 1, 2, 9

and make

(1 + 1 + 1)^2 = 9

but here’s a different approach, breaking the numbers apart using factoring:

9 = 3 * 3
11 = 1 * 11
12 = 2 * 6

so we work with

1, 2, 3, 3, 6, 11

and

1 + 3 + 3 + 6 = 2 + 11

Now, this allows for a little mercurial behavior, since 12 = 2 * 6 = 3 * 4, and I chose 2 * 6 rather than 3 * 4, but it’s an option.
